SportNXT 2025: A Global Dialogue on the Future of Sport

Melbourne, March 12–14, 2025

Tim Cahill joined leading voices in global sport at the SportNXT conference in Melbourne, where discussions centred on the evolving dynamics of investment, governance, and the social responsibilities of the sports industry.

As part of a high-profile panel alongside Netball Australia Chair Liz Ellis and former Australian Sports Commission Chair John Wylie, Tim offered a pragmatic perspective on the role of sovereign wealth in sport. Drawing on his experience as International Sports Advisor at Qatar’s Aspire Academy, he challenged the selective criticism of investment sources in sport, urging for a broader understanding of global trade, politics, and partnerships.

“We talk about business and governments—let’s talk about trade deals before we talk about sponsorship,” Tim told the audience, pointing to Australia's multi-billion-dollar trade relationships with countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Cahill highlighted the importance of consistency in the debate, questioning why global icons like Cristiano Ronaldo face criticism for their affiliations, while similar nations engage in diplomatic and economic partnerships with little objection.

The discussion underscored Tim’s role as a thought leader in the modern sports landscape—one who is unafraid to speak on complex issues and advocate for a more informed and balanced global sports dialogue.
